"Out of the Whirlwind" is the story of a relationship between two strong and caring women — Mary, a former combat nurse, re-living all the horror and despair of her experiences in the Vietnam War, and her Jungian analyst, Dr. Donna Cozort, who helped Mary to unearth, integrate, and learn from the brutal memory she'd kept at bay for twenty-six years. Dr. Cozort tells Mary's story as she experienced it — piecing together the fragments of Mary's history, struggling to contain Mary's terrors, and gradually recognizing, by way of dreams, reactions, and intuition, that Mary's psychological state might yield to its amplified reflection in the Bible's story of Job. Invaluable for its insight into PTSD, "Out of the Whirlwind" is also a personal, moving, and spiritually discerning account of the therapeutic process as it unfolds in time.
In "Out of the Whirlwind," Jungian analyst Donna Cozort describes with great skill and compassion the torturous journey of a Navy nurse through her own wounding experience. Traumatized not only by the horrors of war, but by the betrayal of her comrades and her government, Cozort's patient finds healing in part through her therapist's insight and support, but even more by retracing the path of Job through the dark night of the soul until she, too, encounters what Aeschylus called "the awful grace of God."
— James Hollis, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and author of many books on Jungian theory and practice.
For those considering becoming analysts themselves, this book openly presents the thoughts and feelings of a compassionate and serious practitioner. For those considering entering analysis, particularly for those who have no idea of what that process entails, this book provides invaluable insights into both the traumas and the rewards of a serious and committed analysis.
— Margaret Dozier, M.D., psychiatrist and Jungian analyst, author of "A Candle for Medusa"
"Out of the Whirlwind" is a sensitive recounting of the therapeutic relationship and healing of a woman who was violently traumatized with the predictable demoralization of herself that followed. Author Dr. Donna Cozort describes the inter-relatedness by which the soulful connection and healing process can take place when post-traumatic syndrome is evident. Related in a discerning collaboration by a Jungian analyst and her patient, this review is a pertinent story that many women experience, each in her individual way.
— Nancy Qualls-Corbett, Ph.D., psychologist and Jungian analyst, author (with Marion Woodman) of "The Sacred Prostitute: Eternal Aspect of the Feminine"; (with Leila McMacklin) of "Awakening Woman: Dreams and Individuation"; and "Erotic Transference and Countertransference: Issues of Ethics and Soul."
"Out of the Whirlwind" takes the reader into the paralyzing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder with the story of a former combat nurse, Mary…. Anyone working or living with a PTSD patient will find insights into the internal world and external behavior of the trauma victim in this account of Mary's struggle to survive and heal.
— Wynette Barton, M.S., D.Div., Jungian analyst, and author of a soon to be published book on Egyptian myths and Jungian psychology.
